The revelatory nature of kindergarten antics

As some of you know, I have much respect for books. Due to a certain unfortunate event over 10 years ago I deemed it fit to create and inform one who would borrow books from me about some, shall we say, guidelines. Which I did. To the oblivious of you here they are again:

1. Thou shalt not read books while ingesting nourishment.
2. Thou shalt not read books while imbibing beverage.
3. Thou shalt not read books while performing one's ablutions.
4. Thou shalt not read outside lest the weather is fair.
5. If there are insects buzzing about outside then read only indoors.
6. Thou shalt not read in a fashion that will result in the breaking of the back of the book.
7. Thou shalt not handle the book with hands unclean.
8. Thou shalt not lend, show, hand, give permission to handle or leaf through the books lent to you, to third parties. Even if they have your full and complete trust.
9. Thou shalt not store or transport the book in a fashion that will damage, soil or bemire it.
10. Thou shalt care for borrowed books as thy wouldst want thine lent books to be cared for.

11. Anything else I can think of.

Unfortunately, it seems that this kind of helpful hint can be overlooked by some people. A while ago, somewhere around the end of September I lent a book of mine to someone at the time seemingly on his best way to becoming my friend. As it was a rather short novel, a month or so later I asked that someone, let us refer to him as X, did he find it enjoyable. X stated in reply that he was overworked and that he was reading it on lunch breaks at work. Two weeks later having been invited for dinner, at X's I noticed said novel standing on the bookshelf. To my surprise after removing it from said shelf, I discovered the cover and some of the pages were covered in what looked like mud, but (as I was later informed) what was in fact coffee. X apologized and stated that he would buy me a new copy. Hunky-dory. At this point the reader may ask: And...? So...?
So: Said dinner was about a month ago and from then on absolutely nothing happened. No contact from him whatsoever. Even though my edition is out of print a copy can still be could have been bought online. It just required a little effort. Typing a search query and clicking for confirmation a few times.

What gets my goat here isn't that the book was, shall we say 'caffeinated'. It isn't even the fact that I still don't have a new copy. It's these kindergarten antics, this childish cloak-and-dagger spiel of not saying anything as if it would magically amend the situation. Then putting the book on the shelf, where the probability I find it is more than 0%. Finally, apologies stated, doing absolutely nothing about the situation. I'd understand if it were the case of a six-year old. You know how it goes, "The dog broke the vase with its tail", "The cookie jar fell from the shelf" (of its own volition and its own power mind you). But no, this is a seemingly adult and responsible person.
The keyword being "seemingly." The remaining bitter sense of disappointment is quite far from the realm of seeming and quite near to the realm of "I want you to contact me in, around.. never!" Disappointment. The human race in a nutshell.

Dear nazi-nonsmokers,

(Normal, sane, rational thinking, assertive nonsmoking people may, but don't have to, disregard this post.)

Since the anti-tobacco bill has been passed a while ago and a few days ago it gained legal power I thought we'd have a little chat.
I'm glad that you're happy. Really. Now that you can go and enjoy the fresh air inside the watering hole of your choice. I can't imagine how such an assertive, self-confident, outspoken group as yourselves could have suffered so much in the past. Oh wait! I know! Your smoking friends, base knaves the lot of 'em, must've dragged you out of your homes to the pub, tied up and gagged you, then chain-smoked, exhaling every single puff in your face. And then they drugged and brainwashed you, or otherwise hoodwinked you into thinking that it was fun. That's why you didn't tell them something along the lines of "Hey, this week let's go to a no-smoking place." After all, you're their friend, so you comply and they're your friends, hence they comply. Wait, they don't? Hmm.. I suggest rethinking that "friendship" concept. Okay, enough with the irony. I know that the number of places with a license to sell alcohol and a smoking ban is scarce. But, since I've never had a problem with going outside, or away from the table (provided of course, that the nonsmokers were a majority or that the answer to the question "Would it bother you if..." was affirmative), even when we were in a smoking-allowed establishment, I get a little pissed with all the comments and opinions floating around on the interwebs along the lines of "Slay these fell beasts which spew pungent fumes out of their gaping maws into the faces of the innocent." (you know who you are) which put me in the same basket as people who simply can't behave and puff along on their cancer sticks in places where they're either not allowed to, or where good manners dictate not to. The truth lies, as with most cases, in the middle. Smoking cigarettes doesn't implicitly make me a dick-head and not smoking doesn't implicitly make you Mahatma-fucking-Gandhi. Not responding to situations which bother you when you're entitled to it on the other hand, well... that's another story.
Funny thing. In most (both rational and heated) debates concerning the ban I've read thus far, the olfactory argument is way more present than the health influence argument. Kind of weird that the fact, that the reek of booze and sweat can bother people just as much (try riding a night bus on Saturday) seems to elude the average nazi-nonsmoker. It's as if in the nazi-nonsmoker reality people don't perspire and ingested alcohol smells of roses and kittens while smokers magically lose their sense of smell and grow a third eyelid (the reptiles that they are!) Smoke gets in my eyes just as much as in yours and I have do the laundry just as you.
Despite being a smoker I support this new law, but there's one thing I'd support way more. Obligatory air conditioning in every pub, club, discotheque or other social gathering establishment, both smoking and nonsmoking. And one other - common fucking sense.

Oh, and if you still want to blame someone, blame Christopher Columbus. If he hadn't discovered America those pesky darn Indians Phillip Black-Raven and Morris White-Feather wouldn't have sold the concept of tobacco to us Europeans (I know, I'm oversimplifying;) Or you could blame the government for not banning a substance that has been proven cancerogenic and in large amounts lethal over fifty years ago.

It's that time of year again a.k.a. symptoms of the Waldorf-StattlerSyndrome

Well, almost... Winter isn't shuffling its feet impatiently on the doormat and rattling the doorknob with its clammy hands while hordes of holiday-fever zombies, minds numbed with mall-muzak, trudge through the snow sludge... yet. That's still to come. For the time being Numb-vember is doing its best to drive me stark raving mad. Oh Cthulu! The grayness. The grayness... I was getting my morning nicotine-caffeine fix the other day and as my mind still went through POST sequence it hit me. The only thing lacking in the vista out the window was the hound of the Baskervilles howling silhouette looming menacingly on the moor. A side effect of that (the driving, not the howling nor looming ;) I have yet to get around is a complete and utter stifling of motivation to write the goddamn thesis. Perchance Monday will bring a fresh surge.
For the time being I'm re-watching the first season of "Millenium" as it fits the Novemberish mood like a satin glove. Dark. Depressing. Deranged. And with Lance Henriksen at his best.
Not that there haven't been upsides. Like a phone call from China a while ago. Or having been reminded of Philip Glass through a meme on fb and then staring down at the people in the atrium of a shopping mall going to and fro in Brownian motions with Koyaanisqatsi on the headphones. EDIT: Obviously the weather had to prove me wrong.

Dreameaters

I've got this theory, that these things are just like Venus Fly-traps. Or parasites posing as symbiotic organisms, while in truth only preying on humans. Luring them in with the promise of warmth, the concept of comfort and rest, only to ensnare them in the end. Feeding off their dreams through the course of the night (after all, that has to be the reason why I don't remember mine. If not, what else?). With its own analogue of digestive enzymes - mites consuming abraded epidermis. Fortunately one can free oneself from these things. Albeit it takes a herculean effort and works for a short time only. They seem to have some kind of grip on the mind. Altering the perception as to appear as harmless and ordinary. After all, the problem isn't really the waking up part, it's always the getting out of bed part.

The hunter's moon

I really should step up my game in keeping my anger in check. Really. Which doesn't change the fact that a group of camels is a flock, a group of salmon is a school, a group of owls is a parliament and a group of intoxicated strangers flooding the room with incessant prattle is a fucking nuisance. Nevertheless, leaving the "pah-tay" while everyone else is standing and singing "Happy birthday" - priceless. For everything else...

The state of affairs and the affairs of state

The current state of affairs is sleep deprivation which results in going up and down the staircases in the library, forgetting to write down some bibliographical detail ultimately irrelevant from the academic significance point of view, yet a prerequisite from the formal one. Nevertheless, I'm getting something done and that is the only relevant issue at hand. Bags or no bags under the eyes. As for the affairs of state - I believe that a quote from Hunter S. Thompson sums it up quite adequately:

I was right in the middle of a fucking reptile zoo, and somebody was giving booze to these goddamn things.

Truism 101

On a long enough time-line people diverge into two kinds: the kind which, even after a prolonged absence or lack of contact, remain real, flesh-and-blood persons, and the other ilk, which turn into extras, CGI generated stage props, strings of characters depicting names on your "friends list" on the social networking website of your choice. Which just proves they were never real to begin with.
